New 'Twilight' Book Introduces a Surprising New Heroine

Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight Saga, announced today on her website that she will have a new book published June 5. The story is titled The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. It is, as the name suggests the story of Bree, the one rogue vampire to survive the Cullen/werewolf vs. Victoria’s army of newborns battle in Eclipse. She is judged and executed by the Volturi, so we all know going in that her story ends tragically.

Stephenie mentions that this story was originally meant to be included in her Twilight Saga Guide, but that it was too long for that project. Bree’s story is technically a novella, so shorter than a full novel, but still long enough to warrant a hardcover release. Per the Little and Brown press release, it will be offered for $13.99 and the initial run will be 1.5 millions copies. So far no news on where to find a retailer for pre-order, as this was “a surprise to them” today just like it was to us.

Stephenie also states on her website that she will offer it free for downloading, as it was meant to be included in the Guide rather than alone. But with fabulous cover art like that, why wouldn’t you want to buy a copy for your shelf?! Note on the timing: the story is intentionally being released before Eclipse hits theaters, as she shared it with the screenwriter, director, and cast members who could benefit from its contents (, and there will be pieces of it in the movie. Should be a good summer for Twilight fans all the way around
