Wedding centerpieces, whilst being only a part of the overall wedding decorations, are a key element that will be right in front of your guests for quite a large part of the day. As such you want to spend a little bit of thought on getting them just right. So here’s what you need to know.
How many?
This may seem like a silly question, but how many guests are you inviting and how many tables will they take up at your venue of choice. Then add on extras for the cake, guest book and wedding party tables if you want centerpieces there. You do not want to find out on the day that you have over ordered or shock horror, you do not have enough. Once you know how many you need and what portion of your overall budget is allocated to centerpieces, you can work out how much each one can cost.
Same or similar?
Most ready made centerpieces can be bought in various quantities. In this case it is easier to stick with identical centerpieces on each table, unless the supplier has a range of similar ideas. However, if you are going to make your own centerpieces, it may be easier to make similar but not identical displays. Say for example, you are going to use a collection of different sized and shaped glass vases on each table, it will be preferable to have some variety between tables. You can then pick up the odd vase here and there as you come across them at a discount price.
Make or buy?
If money is no object, then buying centerpieces probably makes some sense, but how many of us does that apply to? If you are trying to keep costs down, you will probably find that making the table displays yourself will save quite a bit and will also be fun.
Color
At last we are onto what these things are actually going to look like. Usually by this stage in your preparations, you have nailed down your wedding theme. This is very helpful as your centerpieces need to tie in with this theme so that they don’t look out of place. Either the color you have chosen or the theme will narrow down your choices of materials to use in your design. A red theme will lead to red flowers, candles, balloons or fruits perhaps or a fall theme will lead to oranges and browns in maybe fruits, leaves and branches or even pumpkins
Design
Whatever items happen to be available in the colors you have chosen may lead to an obvious design choice but if not use online images as your inspiration. Spend an hour or so surfing through what other people have done before you, noting down what you like and what works well.
You should now be ready to get shopping, either for the centerpieces themselves or for the bits and pieces you will need to make them. Either way start early and have fun!
